Short answer: choose a cruise if you want the remote islands (Genovesa, Fernandina, western Isabela, the albatross colony on Española) and you are fine on boats. Choose land-based if you want to spend less (about $2,684 vs $6,771 per person for 8 mid-range days), get seasick, travel with young kids, or want evenings in town.
The quiz
- 1. What is your budget per person for the islands (excluding your flight to Ecuador)?
- 2. How do you feel on boats?
- 3. What matters more?
- 4. Who is travelling?
- 5. How far ahead are you booking?
- 6. Do you want beach time, cafés and evenings in town?
Side by side
| Land-based (hotels + day trips) | Cruise (live aboard a yacht) | |
|---|---|---|
| 8 days, mid-range, per person | $2,684 | $6,771 |
| 8 days, budget, per person | $1,901 | $5,231 |
| Where you go | The four inhabited islands and sites a day boat can reach from them (North Seymour, Bartolomé, Santa Fe, Kicker Rock, Los Túneles…) | Also the outer islands day boats cannot reach: Genovesa, Fernandina, western Isabela, Punta Suárez on Española |
| Time on boats | About 2 hours each way on every island change, plus day-trip runs | You sail at night; mornings and afternoons are landings |
| Seasickness | You can skip a rough day | Every night at sea |
| Guides | Naturalist guide on each tour (required at most park visitor sites) | One naturalist guide for the whole trip |
| Evenings | Restaurants and bars in town | Dinner on board, early nights |
| Booking | Book hotels and day tours separately, change as you go | Fixed itinerary, often booked months ahead |
Costs from the trip cost calculator: two adults, flights from Quito, park fee and transit card included; land-based = 3 islands and 4 tours (mid-range) or 2 islands and 3 tours (budget). Cruise per-day prices are agency examples, see sources.
The middle way
Many people do 4–5 days on land plus one or two boat day trips to the famous outer sites near Santa Cruz (Bartolomé's Pinnacle Rock, North Seymour's boobies). Or book a short 4–5 day cruise and add a few days in Puerto Ayora.
